PTi Helps Service LA Terminal Port Operations

PTi wins business extension with Oracle Database Appliance to expand terminal operation management to the Los Angeles port area.

Yusen Terminals, LLC (YTI) operates marine cargo terminals in the ports of Los Angeles and Oakland.  Their terminal in the Port of Los Angeles spans 185 acres and operates in 3 berths for the loading and off-loading of containerized cargo.  At the heart of their operation is their Terminal Operating System (TOS), Navis Express, which they have relied on for many years to track container handling, terminal logistics, port planning and cargo customs and security.  YTI’s Express application environment is run in an environment comprised of Oracle Enterprise Linux, Oracle Database and Oracle Application Servers, and Predictive Technologies, Inc. (PTi) has proactively managed these environments for YTI for the last 9 years using Oracle Enterprise Manager.

When the legacy hardware for these environments reached end-of-life, Yusen turned to PTi to implement an Oracle Database Appliance X-5 with Oracle Virtual Server to replace a traditional blade server and SAN for both database and application servers.  YTI immediately realized more than a 5 fold improvement in database and application server performance, and has had no unplanned downtime with the ODA, which is an engineered system specifically designed to run high performance database workloads.  Data Integration processes that used to take hours are now completing in a fraction of that.

As YTI looks to the future, they embarked on a lengthy and thorough investigative process to select their next generation TOS, and selected Navis N4, which will also run with Oracle Database in an Oracle Linux environment.  After the exceptional performance of their ODA X-5, Yusen selected the ODA X-7 to run all their N4 workloads, both database and virtualized application servers.  PTi has assisted Yusen with the design and planning for their next generation TOS, and will continue to manage all Yusen’s Oracle workloads as they migrate their operations to N4.
